Think Safety First !
THINK SAFETY FIRST - Think of your own personal safety during and after the storm and stay off the roadways unless it is absolutely necessary!
Once wind speeds reach 50+ mph, our first responders will not be able to be on the road. Find an interior room with no windows or find shelter in a closet should your home be compromised. If you live in a mobile home or low-lying areas, seek the closest shelter. Lake County shelters will open at 8 a.m., Saturday with Eustis High School being a general public shelter. Eustis High's Shelter will not be equipment for those with special needs nor will it be pet friendly.
If you lose power - DO NOT GO OUTSIDE. Stay inside until the storm has passed and it is safe to do so. If you have a generator please follow these guidelines on how to use it from the American Red Cross: GENERATOR SAFETY Unplug your electric appliances so when the power is restored there is not a surge of energy through your house. NEVER place the running GENERATOR inside your home or in a closed in garage.
When it is safe to go outside DO NOT TOUCH DOWNED LINES. You will not know if it is an electric or cable line and you risk death. Be careful with downed tree branches and debris - Make sure you are wearing proper clothing including closed toe shoes and heavy gloves if you are moving or touching debris away from your house.
Flood Safety - Inland flooding is a leading weather-related cause of death in the United States. Are you in a flood prone area? Have a plan and Disaster Supply Kit in case you need to leave before the storm. If you need to drive and you see water in the roadway, TURN AROUND, DON'T DROWN. You do not know how deep that water is and if you see the lines of the road disappear, you risk driving into a ditch with even deeper water.
