Chula Vista Library Hosts Parties to Celebrate REAL Cards for the Young

The Chula Vista Library will host a party at each library branch on Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday of this week for kindergartners and first graders, and their parents, to activate their first REAL (Read, Explore, Achieve @ your Library) Card. The parties are free of charge. Make sure to bring your REAL card. The schedule is below.

Young children in Chula Vista just received their first colorful REAL library card, sent from the Chula Vista Public Library to the homes of 8,000 kindergartners and first graders enclosed in the Chula Vista Elementary School District’s back-to-school packets. The upcoming parties will celebrate the occasion and encourage parents to activate their children’s cards. Refreshments will be served, and the names of all activated cardholders will be entered into a drawing for a new children’s bicycle. The events are free of charge, and an opportunity for families to learn about the library and its services.

Following is the party schedule:
Otay Ranch Branch, 2015 Birch Rd, #409, Tues, Sept 12, 5 p.m.
Civic Center Branch, 365 F St, Wed, Sept 13, 5 p.m.
South Chula Vista Branch, 389 Orange Av, Thurs, Sept 14, 5 p.m.

Studies show that reading inspires creativity and a lifelong love of learning. It also promotes academic success in every area. Putting a library card in the hands of the youngest readers can play a critical role through their school years.

“When children have access to books in the home, they read better and learn more,” says Principal Librarian Stephanie Loney. “In grades one through three, they’re learning to read. From grades four on, they’re reading to learn. Our library opens a new world to young children.”

The Chula Vista Library branches are open seven days a week. Library cards are free of charge, as are library services. Information about the library, including its catalog, calendar of events and online services can be found on its website: www.chulavistalibrary.com.
