Reminder of 57-hour southbound vehicle border closure starts Saturday at 3 a.m.!
REMINDER: Motorists are advised of an upcoming 57-hour southbound vehicle border closure at the San Ysidro Land Port of Entry crossing from September 23-25. The closure is necessary to remove an overhead canopy and for preliminary work to realign the I-5 freeway as part of the General Service Administration (GSA) realignment project. All southbound I-5 and I-805 lanes south from the 905 will be closed from 3 a.m. on Saturday, September 23, until 12 p.m. on Monday, September 25. Southbound vehicles will be detoured to the Otay Mesa Land Port of Entry. Northbound vehicle and pedestrian crossing will remain open at San Ysidro.
Travelers are encouraged to carpool or use public transit (https://www.sdmts.com/) to reach the port during the closure. Those who must cross by vehicle can expect significant delays at the Otay Mesa Port of Entry and are encouraged to plan accordingly.
The realignment of I-5 to connect to Mexico’s El Chaparral Port of Entry is part of the GSA project to modernize and expand the existing “Port of the Future" featuring sustainable design and technology. Upon completion, it will include 38 additional vehicle inspection booths, enhance U.S. Customs and Border Protection’s ability to conduct its mission, and provide a new pedestrian crossing and multimodal transit center.
As the busiest land Port of Entry in the Western Hemisphere, 50,000 northbound vehicles are processed each day and 25,000 northbound pedestrians cross the border daily at San Ysidro.
Phase 3 is scheduled to be completed in the summer of 2019. For more information on the realignment project, visit https://www.gsa.gov/5realign.
