Patient Officer Catches a Habitual Thief
On September 26, 2017 at about 11:30 AM, a local business, Apex Fencing, called Anderson Police Department to report they may have located a previously reported stolen generator and fence posts from an online marketplace. The proactive victim had printed out surveillance pictures of the suspect and pictures from an online marketplace where the victim had located items for sale that appeared to belong to the business. The victim also reported that they recognized the suspect because he works at another store in Anderson that they frequent (we will not disclose that business name because they have no affiliation with the crimes involved).
The Officer responded to the suspect’s place of employment to discuss the alleged crime. The suspect denied being involved and denied that the pictures were of him.
The diligent young officer waited in the suspect’s neighborhood near Alexander Ave and Loop Street and at around 4:25 PM the officer saw the suspect driving away from his house with a generator in his vehicle. Because we knew a generator had been stolen, and this suspect looked similar to the suspect in the surveillance pictures and it is uncommon for people to drive around with a large generator in their back seat, especially right after being questioned by police, the officer conducted an investigative stop on the vehicle.
The victim from Apex Fencing responded and positively identified the generator as his. After the stolen property was identified the suspect provided a full confession stating that he had been stealing property from Apex for several months.
The suspect, identified as 44 year old Jason Goltz from Anderson was arrested and booked into Shasta County Jail for possession of stolen property. Other charges may follow once the investigation is complete.
