On September 26, 2017 a resident reported a Craigslist scam. The resident placed items for sale on Craigslist and was contacted by a possible buyer. The buyer sent the resident a check in excess of the agreed upon amount and asked they just give the overage to the moving company once they arrive to pick up the items.

This is a very common scam. The scam artist is hoping the fraudulent check will be deposited in your bank and you remove your money (the overage) and send it to them via pre-paid card, mail or wire transfer before the bank notices the fraud. Once the fraud is discovered it is too late if you have sent your money back to the scam artist.
