Planned explosion today at old Sappi site for demo of smokestack. Temporary road detours.
The Public Safety Office would like to remind you that on the morning of Sunday, October 1, 2017 there is a planned explosion that will take place as part of the demolition of the Old Sappi Power Smoke Stack on Lakeshore Drive. This will occur sometime around 9 a.m. to 10 a.m.
There is a 500’ radius in which residents are being asked to evacuate their homes. Those from 500 to 1000 feet away are being asked to either shelter in place or also evacuate. Residents can return home once the street barricades are taken down.
No Drones are authorized to fly within the 1000’ safety zone around the Sappi property.
In addition to the immediate portion of Lakeshore Drive being closed during this time, LaRue, Clifford and Sherin will also be closed to traffic.
Melching Demolition and Dismantling has delivered notification to those homes in the 500 foot radius and has also set up a Facebook page that can be accessed at www.facebook.com/sappimuskegon . That page also lists a contact e-mail should you have further concerns or questions that are not answered after viewing the page. We would encourage you to first view the Facebook page before e-mailing to avoid them getting flooded with e-mails as the page attempts to answer the most common anticipated questions.
The Public Safety Office will also send out updates via Nixle of any important changes.
