Temple Station will be honoring our very own Deputy Harold Blevins.
On Thursday, October 12, 2017, it will be the 60th anniversary of the on duty death of Temple Station Deputy Harold Blevins. For those that do not know the circumstances surrounding his death, the following is a brief synopsis of what occurred during the early morning hours of October 12, 1957:
Deputy Harold Blevins, and his partner, Deputy Charles Covington were assigned to work 51. At 0243 hours, they responded to a Robbery in Progress call at 3007 Huntington Drive, Pasadena County (the business at the location was Woody and Eddie’s Restaurant, the same building is now the current location of Starbucks, B-Man’s, and Subway). At 0248 hours, they arrived and approached the establishment from the east side. As Deputy Blevins entered the doorway, he was immediately confronted by one of the two suspects and engaged in a brief struggle before being shot and mortally wounded. The suspect then fired from the doorway at Deputy Covington, striking him in the chest. Deputy Covington, despite being shot, returned fire and struck the suspect, who died at the scene. Deputy Covington was able to return to their patrol car, to retrieve the radio, and broadcast the shooting. Assisting units arrived at the location and located the second suspect hiding in his parked vehicle. Deputy Covington recovered from his injuries and returned to patrol duties at Temple Station. The second suspect was sentenced to life in prison without the possibility of parole.
Attached is an image we recently received of two photographs. The original 1957 picture shows the Temple Station Captain standing in the doorway, over the fatally wounded suspect. The background picture is the current Starbucks (same door).
To pay honor and tribute to Temple Station Deputy Harold Blevins, on Thursday, October 12, 2017, at 1100 hours, we will be holding a memorial ceremony at 3007 Huntington Drive (Starbucks parking lot). We would like to invite anyone interested to attend the ceremony.
