***Safety Alert***

The Bergen County Prosecutors Office has issued the following public safety advisory:

Over the past few months, there has been a rise in burglaries targeting the elderly within Bergen County. The suspects are posing as utility workers, municipal inspectors, handymen and even law enforcement and will distract the homewoner at the front door while an accomplice enters another part of the home to steal cash and valuables.

HPPD is advising Residents to use these precautions when someone is asking to access your home:

--Ask to see their identification

--Look for vehicles to ensure they have proper logos and record license plates if possible

--Tell the "worker" you are going to call the company and the police for verification that they are allowed to be in the area.

--If they leave, call the police anyway to ensure they are found before they target additional homes.

REMINDER: All Soliciters must wear visable Photo ID badges and have a permit on their person to solicit in town. The Police Department and Borough Hall have a list of the permitted companies allowed in the area.

CALL 911 IMMEDIATELY If you have any doubts about the individual or see any suspicious activity.
