Advisory

Deputy involved shooting

On October 16, 2017, at approximately 10:25 pm a deputy was dispatched to 2607 W. Vincent in reference to bullet holes found on the outside of the house. During the investigation, the deputy also observed bullet holes on the outside of a neighboring home, 2619 W. Vincent. It appeared to the deputy the bullet holes on both homes originated from 2619 W. Vincent. After seeing a woman peering out of a window, the deputy decided to initiate contact with the occupants of the 2619 W. Vincent address. A second deputy arrived on scene and the deputies approached the front door of 2619 W. Vincent to investigate. The glass screen door and front door were closed, but they could see the suspect in his recliner through the beveled glass in the front door as they knocked and announced themselves. He didn’t immediately respond, but when they knocked again, he got up, went towards the front door then into a hallway. He immediately returned and opened the door where he raised a gun towards the deputies as the deputies were yelling “Sheriff’s Office” and backing away from the threat. Both deputies fired through the glass and shot the 58-year-old male suspect. The male was taken to the hospital where he was admitted and is being treated for non-life threatening injuries in stable condition.

The Sheriff’s Critical Incident Team comprised of sheriff’s deputies from Greene, Lawrence and Webster Counties responded to investigate this officer involved shooting. The investigation is still ongoing.

“This is a reminder to us that responding to vandalism call can result in life or death choices. I am so glad both deputies were not injured or killed, as they resorted to their training and tactics which saved their lives,” stated Sheriff Arnott.
