Voluntary Surveillance Camera Registration
The Downey Police Department is partnering with the community in an effort to solve more crimes. Downey residents and business owners who have private surveillance cameras can now register with the police department. This voluntary program would develop a database of privately owned security cameras. In case of a crime, investigators can identify registered cameras in the area and contact the appropriate owners in order to collect important evidence from a crime the cameras may have recorded. The Police Department will not have direct access to video feeds nor be able to control the cameras. Camera owners will maintain full control of their cameras and feeds, and will be contacted if their cameras may have captured useful information.
