Halloween is a time to celebrate and enjoy the annual traditions of dressing up in costumes and trick-or-treating for those Halloween sweets. Today is a time for fun with friends, family, and neighbors. The Burbank Police wish you a safe and Happy Halloween.

In an effort to help the Burbank community enjoy Halloween safely, the Burbank Police Department is sharing the following tips for motorists, parents, and trick-or-treaters:

Motorists:
• Please slow down, especially in residential neighborhoods, and obey all traffic signs and signals. We ask that you drive below the speed limit and be alert for children walking and crossing the street.
• Dark costumes can be hard to see, especially at night. Please be on the lookout for trick-or-treating enthusiasts and remember they may not always see you.

Parents:
• Make sure small children are supervised at all times by an adult, and that children under the age of 14 are accompanied by a responsible guardian.
• Plan and discuss the route your trick-or-treaters will follow and make sure they stick to it.
• Encourage children to remain in groups, if possible.
• Teach children to stop only at well-lit houses and to never enter a stranger's home.
• Establish a time for children to return home.
• Tell children not to eat any treats until they get home.
• Inspect treats and get rid of any that look as though they've been opened or tampered with.

Trick-or-Treaters:
• Be visible! Wear reflective tape on costumes to improve visibility to motorists and others.
• Wear disguises that don’t obstruct vision, and avoid face masks. Instead, consider using nontoxic face paint.
• Ensure any props are flexible and blunt-tipped to avoid injury from tripping or horseplay.
• Carry a flashlight and place it face down in the treat bucket to free up one hand. Never shine it into the eyes of oncoming drivers. When crossing the street, hold the flashlight and point it towards the ground to illuminate your surrounding area and alert drivers to your presence.
• Have your parent or guardian inspect all treats and never consume any candy that appears to have been opened or tampered with.
