OFFICER RECEIVES AWARD FOR OUTSTANDING SERVICE
On 06/22/2017 at approximately 0637, Officer Bryan Toney was on duty by himself when he got a request from the county to assist with a call in Reference to an individual threatening suicide. The County Officers making the request asked Officer Toney to stage on scene and wait for them. Just as Officer Toney arrived communications called back and advised him that the subject had shot himself and the wife had found him in the back yard. At that point Officer Toney decided to go in the scene alone in an effort to render aide and allow for the medics to come on in once they arrived. The family lead Officer Toney to the male party outside the residence where he was mortally wounded. Officer Toney felt for a pulse and found none. Officer Toney told me at that point he believed CPR would be pointless, but with the family looking on he wanted to make every effort he could. Officer Toney started CPR and continued CPR until paramedics arrived. Unfortunately the subject passed away. The actions taken by Officer Toney that day by entering the scene after being advised to wait till other officers arrived and rendering CPR based on the fact that he did not want to give up hope for the subject or for his on looking family, displayed a high level of compassion by Officer Toney. In a world where officers respond to one call after another, I think it is important to recognize when an officer stops and takes into account the emotions and feelings of the citizens we are helping.
