Sheriff Richard Behnke reports that on 12/15/2017 at 2038 hours his Deputies were dispatched to a crash that occurred on M-60, near Barron Lake Rd, in Howard Township, Cass County Michigan. A 29yr old South Bend resident, Robert Kmitta was operating a snowmobile on Michigan State trails when he attempted to cross M-60, and was struck by a vehicle driven by Tamera Gardner, 42yr old Cassopolis resident. Kmitta was transported by SMCAS to South Bend Memorial for evaluation and treatment. Kmitta was wearing a helmet at the time of the accident. Alcohol is not believed to be a factor. This case remains under investigation at this time.





Cass County Sheriffs Deputies were assisted by Howard township fire, SMCAS, and Pokagon Tribal Police.
