No one wants to imagine getting ready to leave for work on these frigid mornings, only to discover their warm ride is missing.  You already know to lock your car, not to leave it running while unattended, and to take your keys in with you and remove or hide anything of value inside the car.  These simple things can prevent the vast majority of cars from being targeted.

In some cases, though, thieves can still get in and start your car, driving it off and leaving you stranded.  This is especially true for certain makes of vehicles with locks that are unfortunately easier to defeat.  With this in mind, there are some additional steps you can take to ensure your car stays safe.

1. Consider putting an anti-theft device on the car, such as a steering wheel lock, kill switch, wheel immobilizer or electronic immobilizer.  These options can range in price from less than $20 to more than $1,000, but even the simplest and cheapest ones can be effective and worth the investment.
2. If available, consider parking your car off the street, inside a garage or parked into a driveway so that it can’t be driven off even if thieves are able to get in.
3. Even simply parking in a well-lit area in plain view of your neighbors, and keeping your car running and looking good can help deter thefts too.  If thieves believe you care about your car and are looking out for it, they’re less likely to try to take it.

There is plenty of great advice out there to prevent your car from being stolen, but it’s up to you to apply it to your car!  So do what you can – even the smallest things can make a big difference.
