Suspect with history of violence against police officers identified as man injured in police action shooting
The suspect who assaulted and tried to disarm an Evansville Police officer has been identified as 47 year old VINCENT BUFKIN.
Two officers were attempting to investigate a battery and trespassing complaint when Bufkin attacked them. Bufkin struck both officers and tried to disarm one of the officers before being shot. Bufkin was shot in the area of his shoulder and is still hospitalized under police guard.
Bufkin has a history of violence against Evansville Police Officers.
On April 16th, 2008 he was arrested for Felony Battery on Law Enforcement when he attacked an officer during a narcotics investigation. During the ensuing fight with officers, Bufkin bit an officer’s finger.
On May 24th, 2013, Bukin violently resisted an officer who was trying to arrest him on a felony warrant. In the arrest affidavit, the officer reported that he could feel Bufkin tug on his belt. The officer had to receive help from a citizen to try and gain control of Bufkin. At one point during the fight, the officer tried to prevent Bufkin from getting a knife from his pocket. When he grabbed Bufkin by the wrist, he bit the officer on the arm. Additional officers arrived and were able to get Bufkin into handcuffs.
In addition to his violence against police officers, Bufkin was arrested by Vanderburgh County Sheriff’s Deputies for threatening to kill then U.S. Congressman, and former Vanderburgh County Sheriff, Brad Ellsworth. That arrest took place on June 20, 2009.
The investigation into the police action shooting is ongoing. No additional information is available for release at this time.
All suspects are innocent until proven guilty in a court of law.
