SUMMARY: On Wednesday, January 7, 2018, at approximately 4:29 pm, deputies from the Apple Valley Police Department responded to reports of an Armed Robbery at the Food for Less at Bear Valley and Kiowa Road in the Town of Apple Valley. A 911 caller reported a subject stole items and brandished a knife when store employees attempted contact with him. The suspect left the store with the property. The caller followed the suspect updating deputies of his location. The suspect fled east into the neighboring community stripping his clothes and hiding the stolen property. An Apple Valley Detective observed a suspect matching the description given by the witnesses and attempted contact with him. The suspect attacked and actively fought with the Detective before fleeing on foot. He was seen entering several businesses to hide. Moments later Apple Valley Deputies Stephan Esparza and Robert Smith located the suspect, later identified as Tommie Buckner. Buckner ran from the deputies and a short foot pursuit ensued. Deputies Smith, Esparza and Sergeant Jim Evans apprehended Buckner in the center of Bear Valley Road during rush hour traffic.

Buckner was arrested and escorted safely from the street. Buckner was not injured during the arrest and was booked at the High Desert Detention Center for Armed Robbery and Resisting Arrest by Force. The Detective received minor, non-life-threatening injuries.
