Advisory

Warrant phone scams. Calls indicating arrest warrant are likely scams.

Macungie Police Department received about 6 calls today from residents who received telephone calls indicating arrest warrants were issued for them. These calls are very likely scam attempts to scare you into sending money to clear the warrant. In all calls the victim was instructed that $500 needed to be sent via MoneyGram or Western Union to avoid being detained and incarcerated. The scare tactic and urgency of sending money immediately is done to prevent the victim from checking the validity of the call.

Any resident who received a call where they are to use a money transfer service should seriously question whether the call is legitimate. One thing you can do is ask many questions. If the scammer cannot answer or becomes angry and vulger you can assume it's not legitimate. Scammers change their stories but never change trying to get you to send money. Money sent via MoneyGram or Western Union is typically never recovered after you realize you were scammed.

If a resident has a question about a phone call they received they can always contact our department.
