Major Traffic Collision Incident
On February 12, 2018, at approximately 3:41 am, officers from the Torrance Police Department responded to a major injury traffic collision in the 3600 block of Emerald Street.
On arrival, officers discovered that a 2016, Lexus CT200H had collided with a 2016, Dodge tow truck, and three pedestrians, including the tow truck driver. The preliminary investigation indicates the tow truck and its driver were in the westbound lane of Emerald Street securing a 2004, Volkswagen Passat for tow. The Lexus, which was travelling westbound on Emerald Street collided with the tow truck driver, the driver of the Volkswagen, a third pedestrian, the Dodge tow truck, and the Volkswagen being towed.
Immediately following the collision, the driver of the Lexus fled the location on foot, leaving his vehicle behind. All three pedestrians were treated at the scene by Torrance Fire Department personnel. Two of the pedestrians were transported to a local hospital in serious condition. The third pedestrian was treated at the scene for a complaint of pain and released.
The uninjured driver of the Lexus was later located by Torrance Police Officers, and placed under arrest for hit and run approximately 3 ½ hours later. The driver of the Lexus was identified as In Song, 61 year-old resident of Torrance. The pedestrians were identified as a 53 year-old male resident of Torrance and two 28 year-old males, residing in Lawndale and Lomita. The names of the injured pedestrians are being withheld pending notification of family members. Alcohol intoxication is being investigated as a contributing factor in the collision.
Emerald Street was closed to through traffic between Amie Street and Hawthorne Boulevard from approximately five hours during the course of the investigation.
This collision is being investigated by the Torrance Police Department’s Traffic Division under the command of Captain Martin Vukotic, Commander of the Special Operations Bureau.
