Threats to Columbia Schools
The Columbia Township Police Department is investigating an incident involving a student that previously attended Columbia Central High School.
In this current incident, the student is an 18 year-old male, who was suspended and banned from school property in December of 2017. On Wednesday, February 14, 2018, in the late afternoon, he was observed in his vehicle in the parking lot of Columbia Central High School.
The person who observed him in his vehicle in the lot knew he was not allowed on school property, and Columbia Township Police were contacted.
Columbia Officers began searching for the student, and located him on Thursday morning, at a residence (not his) in Lenawee County. Based on comments made by the student to others, as well as statements made to Sgt. Niles when he was contacted, he was transported to Henry Ford Allegiance where he was petitioned for a mental evaluation.
Although no weapons were located on the student, and although there was not a specific threat to shoot up the school, due to the statements he had been making and his unstable mental state, it was deemed most appropriate to have him evaluated.
As in the most recent Columbia Township case with a separate student approximately a week ago, we are appreciative of the early contact by the school district and our ability to quickly intervene and investigate before a tragic event occurred.
We continue to encourage the public to be mindful of social media posts or comments that could hold clues to potential threats of violence, and to please report any suspicions sooner rather than later.
As in the previous investigation, this report will be forwarded to the Jackson County Prosecutor’s Office for review when complete.
