Modesto CA: Suspected DUI Driver Crashes and Two Passengers Are Deceased

On Thursday February 22nd, 2018 at approximately 12:30am, emergency crews responded to a solo vehicle collision on Sylvan Ave between Bridgeford Ln and McHenry Ave. 28 year old Alfonzo Rodriguez-Quintana of Modesto was located near the scene lying on the ground. The involved 2002 Dodge pickup truck, registered to Quintana, collided with several objects including a tree, and caught on fire. Two occupants were trapped inside. The Modesto Fire Department along with Modesto Police worked on extinguishing the fire. Two passengers remained trapped inside the vehicle and died. Their identity is still being confirmed and next of kin notifications are pending.

The preliminary investigation led officers to believe that Quintana was the driver at the time of the collision. Quintana was suspected of driving while intoxicated. He was treated for minor injuries at a local hospital and released to officers. Quintana was arrested and booked into the Stanislaus County Jail for two counts of homicide, driving under the influence causing injuries, gross bodily injury in the commission of a felony charge, and an outstanding warrant.

The events leading up to the collision are currently being investigated. As a standard procedure, a comprehensive collision investigation has begun and is in the early stages. Evidence still needs to be examined, and additional witnesses are being sought.
