On March 6, 2018, just after 3:30 AM, an off-duty Los Angeles Sheriff’s Department Deputy was in the area of Edgewood Drive and McVicker Canyon Park Road, in the city of Lake Elsinore, when he witnessed a possible vehicle burglary in progress. The deputy identified himself and attempted to detain the suspect.

The suspect fled to a waiting vehicle occupied by two other people. The suspects refused to surrender and drove into the deputy, causing injury, at which point a deputy involved shooting occurred. The deputy immediately apprehended one of the three suspects. The other two initially escaped on foot. As Lake Elsinore Police officers responded to assist, they apprehended one suspect in the immediate vicinity, and after an extensive search of the area, located the third suspect. The identities of the suspects are being withheld at this time, pending the ongoing investigation. One suspect sustained minor injury during the shooting and was treated and released for a minor injury at an area hospital. No citizens in the community were injured as a result of this incident.

Investigators from the Riverside County Sheriff Department's Central Homicide Unit responded and assumed the investigation. The Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department also sent out an investigative team to investigate the incident. Per the Los Angeles Sheriff’s Department’s policy, the involved deputy was placed on administrative leave.
