Bering Hill Chapel permanently closed. The lot will still be used in an emergency.
Today, city staff discovered another break-in at the Bering Hill Chapel. As you are likely aware, the Bering Hill Chapel is the main evacuation center in the event of a Tsunami hazard to the community. It appears that this recent break-in damaged one of the main collection rooms containing large glass walls and doors. Said individuals also ransacked the emergency supply cache that had been acquired and stored at the facility and appeared to be "living" in the facility.
Due to the damage, and as an attempt to mitigate any further expensive repairs beyond what we expect to now incur in a future repair project, we must effectively close the facility. We estimate the damage now incurred, along with other damage previously incurred to be in excess of $50,000. The facility is no longer safe to use as a long term facility in the event of a tsunami hazard.
In the event of an evacuation people will be directed to go to the facility but will be unable to enter the facility. The property lot and surrounding area should be sufficient to handle the amount of vehicles that would likely evacuate to the area.
