MAIL THIEF ARRESTED

PRESS RELEASE
MAIL THIEF ARRESTED
Friday, March 9th, 2018 at 1800 hours

On 03-09-2018, at approximately 0106 hours, an Anderson Police Department (APD) officer conducted a traffic stop on a 2001 Chevrolet truck for a vehicle code violation. The driver of the vehicle was identified as William Lee Ashley, 36 years, of Anderson. The passenger was identified as Alexandrya Danielle Magdaleno-Chapman, 32 years, of Anderson.

The officer knew of Ashley from prior drug related arrests. APD K9 Iro was utilized in a narcotics search capacity and alerted to the odor of narcotics in Ashley’s vehicle.

A subsequent search of Ashley revealed a glass methamphetamine smoking pipe in his pants pocket. A search of Magdaleno-Chapman revealed several hypodermic syringes hidden on her person and a usable amount of methamphetamine in her purse.

A search of the driver’s area in the truck revealed illegal prescription medication, fraudulent checks, possibly stolen credit cards, a large canister of pepper spray, a functioning taser, a hypodermic syringe, and a box of 9mm ammunition. Ashley is a convicted felon and prohibited from possessing pepper spray, tasers, and ammunition. A search of the bed area of the truck revealed burglary tools, a US Postal Service mail box key, a US Postal Service lock, and a large amount of mail from citizens of Shasta County.

Due to the extremely large amount of mail, it is estimated that Ashley was in possession of multiple pieces of mail from over 100 victims. The type of mail ranged from credit card statements, tax information, and general mail. The addresses on the stolen mail were from Anderson, Redding, Happy Valley, and other parts of Shasta County. In the coming days/weeks, APD officers will be contacting potential victims as it relates to this case.

Magdaleno-Chapman was issued a criminal citation for the possession of drug paraphernalia and the possession of methamphetamine. Ashley’s vehicle was impounded and he was transported to the Shasta County Jail where he was booked for charges of being a felon in possession of ammunition, a felon in possession of a taser, a felon in possession of pepper spray, drug paraphernalia, possession of burglary tools, identity theft, and possession of stolen property. Additional charges will likely be filed upon conclusion of the investigation.
