#LASD SEB Team Brings Safe Conclusion to Palmdale Pursuit

On Friday, March 9, 2018, Palmdale Station deputies attempted to conduct a traffic stop of a suspected reckless drunk driver, shortly before 3:00 P.M.  The suspect fled from deputies, initiating a pursuit near the 14 freeway and Angeles Crest Highway.

During the pursuit, Palmdale deputies utilized “spike strips” in an attempt to disable the suspect’s vehicle. The spike strips did partially disable the vehicle by flattening some of the tires. The suspect’s vehicle was able to continue operating onto a dirt field near Peaceful Valley Road in the city of Acton.

The vehicle became disabled and came to a stop on the dirt field. In an attempt to have the suspect cooperate and peacefully surrender, Palmdale Station deputies gave several verbal commands to the suspect. The suspect did not cooperate and refused to exit the vehicle. Less than lethal force was utilized, however, he still did not comply.

Special Enforcement Bureau Special Weapons Team, K-9, and paramedics from LASD’s Emergency Services Detail, in addition to a Crisis Negotiation Team, were summoned and immediately responded to the scene.

A peaceful resolution resulted when the suspect surrendered to members of the Special Weapons Team without further incident.

The suspect, 35 year-old Joseph Robert Rivera, a resident of San Bernardino, was taken into custody and transported to a local hospital for medical clearance before for booking.

No deputies were injured.

The investigation is ongoing and there is no additional information available at this time.
