Tonight Change Your Clock-Change your Batteries

Smoke detectors save lives! This weekend, when you change your clock – Riverside Fire Department is urging you to also change the battery in your smoke detectors.

In the event of smoke and fire, a properly installed and maintained smoke detector can save your life. Smoke detectors are essential, and provide an early warning of danger should a fire break out. When a smoke detector activates, that is your signal to follow the family’s fire escape plan and get your family to safety.

The NFPA says that: Sixty-five percent of reported home fire deaths in 2000-2004 resulted from fires in homes with no smoke alarms or smoke alarms that didn’t work. No smoke alarms were present in 43% of the home fire deaths. In 22% of the home fire deaths, smoke alarms were present but did not activate. The death rate per 100 reported fires is twice as high in homes without working smoke alarms as homes with working smoke alarms. An estimated 890 lives could be saved each year if all homes had working smoke alarms. (Source usfa.dhs.gov)

If a Riverside resident need a new smoke alarm or is over 10 years old, please contact the fire department at 816-372-9024
