Scam Alert

Press Release March 22, 2018

HARRISBURG, ILL. – The Saline County Sheriff’s Office would like to make citizens aware that the IRS phone scam is occurring again.

A subject stating that they are with the IRS or they are an IRS employee, will tell the caller that they owe money and may even threaten that law enforcement has been notified and will be coming to arrest them if the don’t make immediate payment. The scammers may have your name, phone number and address and they will often use a fake or “spoofed” phone number, so it appears that they are calling from the IRS.

Never give out confidential information over the phone. The IRS does not make phone calls unless they have notified the person by mail first, they do not request immediate payments over the phone and they do not ask for credit card numbers over the phone.

If you happen to receive one of these IRS scam calls, it is NOT necessary to contact the Saline County Sheriff’s Office or law enforcement. Ignore the phone call or hang-up on the caller. Again do not give out confidential information to these callers. The only time it is necessary to contact law enforcement is if you have paid money to the scammers.
