New CAD/RMS and Radio System Approved

On Thursday, March 22, 2018, the Turlock City Council unanimously approved the purchase and installation of a new Computer Aided Dispatch and Records Management System for Turlock Police and Fire, along with a new Radio System for the City of Turlock. An emergency City Council meeting was held after continued radio system problems jeopardized the safety of Officers and Firefighters.

The current radio system was purchased over 20 years ago and until recently, had served the City well. However, there have been several disruptions and two system failures over the last eight months. During one failure, Turlock Police lost all radio contact with dispatch, jeopardizing their safety and causing delays in responding to calls for service. Due to the age of the system, maintenance and replacement parts have become obsolete. It was determined that immediate action is needed to be taken to ensure communication with emergency services.

The current CAD/RMS system is over 27 years old and has become so outdated that it no longer integrates well with new systems and technology. With new mandates placed on public safety to track various data, the current CAD/RMS system will not accommodate new software to capture this necessary information.

The request to purchase a new CAD/RMS System and Radio System was made to achieve maximum interoperability between the two systems. The purchase of both systems will allow for more efficient dispatching for Turlock Fire Department, while also allowing for the most effective operation and full performance of a state of the art radio system.

“The Officers and Firefighters need a reliable communications system in order to respond safely to the thousands of calls for service that they receive yearly. The safety of our residents and first responders is our first priority. This new Radio and CAD/RMS system is a testament to the City of Turlock’s ongoing commitment to public safety” said Turlock Police Chief Nino Amirfar.

It is estimated that the cost for both systems will be around six (6) million dollars. The radio system should be operational in six (6) to eight (8) months, while the CAD/RMS system should be fully operational by mid-2019.
