Subject on Silas Street taken into custody and being evaluated

After four hours of negotiations, the Newberry Police Department took a barricaded subject into custody without incident.
At approximately 9:47 a.m., city officers responded to a home on Silas Street for a subject whom they were told had mental health issues and had fired shots inside the home. Police Chief Roy McClurkin said the subject had barricaded himself inside the home with a gun, firing one shot prior to law enforcement’s arrival.
While law enforcement attempted to get him to come outside, the subject refused.
“We got him on the phone and tried to negotiate with him to leave the residence,” McClurkin said.
The South Carolina Law Enforcement Division’s SWAT Team and negotiator was called to assist law enforcement, due to the subject being armed.
Once SLED was on scene, McClurkin said they began negotiations with the subject by phone. The subject fired numerous shots inside the home during this time, McClurkin said.
After over four hours of negotiations, McClurkin said it was determined that they would use tear gas inside the residence to get the subject to surrender.
“The subject was taken into custody without incident,” McClurkin said.
Neither law enforcement or subject were injured. The subject was taken to Newberry County Memorial Hospital for a mental evaluation.
The Newberry Police Department was assisted by the Newberry County Sheriff’s Office, the South Carolina Law Enforcement Division, Newberry Fire Department and Newberry County EMS.
McClurkin said although they had the area surrounding Silas Street locked down and asked some residents to temporarily vacate their homes, the public was never in jeopardy, with the incident isolated to the one residence.
“We are thankful for the cooperation of the neighbors in the community and the help from the Sheriff’s Department, SLED, Newberry Fire Department
