Charges filed in incident on Silas Street
Daniel Allen Bowden, 52, of 1407 Silas Street has been charged with Breach of Peace of a High and Aggravated Nature, Assault and Battery on an officer while resisting arrest, and Discharging a Firearm in the city limits stemming from an incident that occurred Monday, March 26 at 1407 Silas Street.
At approximately 9:47 a.m. on March 26, city officers and Newberry County Sheriff’s deputies responded to 1407 Silas Street for a subject whom they were told had mental health issues and had fired shots inside the home. Police Chief Roy McClurkin said Bowden had barricaded himself inside the home with a gun, firing one shot prior to law enforcement’s arrival.
After attempts to get Bowden to surrender his weapon and leave the residence were unsuccessful, the South Carolina Law Enforcement Division’s SWAT Team and negotiator were called to assist law enforcement.
Once SLED was on scene, McClurkin said they began negotiations with the subject by phone. The subject fired numerous shots inside the home during this time, McClurkin said.
After over four hours of negotiations, McClurkin said it was determined that they would use tear gas inside the residence to get the subject to surrender.
The Newberry Police Department was assisted by the Newberry County Sheriff’s Office, the South Carolina Law Enforcement Division, Newberry Fire Department and Newberry County EMS.
Bowden was taken into custody by the SLED SWAT Team. He was transported to Newberry County Memorial Hospital for a mental evaluation and was later released and transported to the Newberry County Detention Center.
Bowden is still in custody and awaiting a bond hearing for the list of charges.
McClurkin said Newberry Police Department processed the scene of the incident and located and seized Bowden’s weapon.
