Subject: Evaluation of Sewer Collection System
Dear Resident/Business
In the next couple of weeks the city will be undertaking the evaluation of the sewer collection system in your area. The purpose is to identify potential leaks in the lines which allow rain water to enter the collection system during heavy rainfall episodes. The exact timing of the evaluation is dependent on weather conditions and may span several weeks.
To conduct the evaluation smoke will be pumped into the collection system. The smoke is a non-toxic odorless product which is heated to cause the smoke. During the testing no smoke should enter your home or business but should only be present in the vent pipe. If your vent does not exit the building it may present itself in the attic space. Smoke which presents itself elsewhere within a home or business is an indication that there are vent problems within the building. Businesses should be sure any floor drains have water in them to seal against smoke entering the business. One common site at a residence which is often improperly vented is the washing machine drain line.
Employees will mark sites which smoke presents itself which may mean they will be in your yards. All will have city uniforms on should you have concerns about people being on your property. Repairs to leaks in the collection system identified during the smoke testing will begin after the evaluation and determining what is the best approach to make the repairs.
It is hoped that the sources of large amounts of rainwater entering the collection system will be eliminated thus allowing you to use your facilities regardless of the weather condition outside.
