PRESS RELEASE: Two Warsaw Police Department officers receive life saving awards

On May 13, 2017, Corporal Phillip Hawks responded to the scene of a female victim suffering from a gunshot wound to the arm 33 minutes after his shift ended.

Upon arrival, he assessed the scene, retrieved his trauma kit, and began rendering aid. Hawks requested Patrol Officer Samuel Weaver, who had just arrived, to assist by applying pressure to the wound using quick clot gauze while he applied a tourniquet to the female’s upper arm/shoulder area to restrict the blood flow to the wound. Weaver continued to encourage the victim; keeping her calm during an extremely stressful situation and continued to gather information from her that led to the apprehension of the suspect.

EMS had been called to two scenes near one another, which caused confusion and delayed response time. However, both officer’s proficiency and ability to quickly and effectively apply live saving trauma care allowed for rapid patient assessment by paramedics upon their arrival.

Neither the suspect or the victim in the case were residents of Kosciusko County. The victim has since been released from the hospital.

Hawks and Weaver are to be commended for their life saving efforts and the continued service they provide to the City of Warsaw and the Warsaw Community.
