The Board of Water Supply (BWS) is actively working to repair the 24” water main which ruptured near the entrance to the Waimanalo Gulch Landfill on Farrington Hwy. above Ko Olina in Leeward Oahu.
 
As of 4:00 p.m., today, BWS crews had finished repairs to the main, removed the shoring from the trench and had begun to backfill the trench up to the level of the main. The crew was working to restore water pressure to the main to test the repair.
 
If no leaks develop, crews will move to fully charge the system. It could take several hours before full water pressure and flow are returned to the entire Leeward Coast. They are anticipating this happening late this evening. Please continue to conserve water until the system is fully restored.
 
The heavy lift equipment used in the repair process necessitates temporarily closing one lane of Farrington Hwy., westbound, while the installation or removal is taking place. BWS crews will not be closing lanes on Farrington Hwy. between the 2:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. peak commute hours.
 
While the break is completely within the dirt shoulder of Farrington Hwy. just west of the Waimanalo Gulch Landfill driveway and will have minimal impact to the evening commute. Driver caution in the area will still be necessary and appreciated. Both westbound lanes of traffic on Farrington Hwy. will remain open, except for short, occasional interruptions to move heavy equipment. Drivers are encouraged to slow down and watch for Police Officers on duty who may make traffic pattern adjustments, as necessary.
 
The Waianae-bound merge lane from the landfill road has been closed to keep vehicles away from the work area.
 
The main repair is expected to extend into the night.
 
There is reserve capacity in Waianae Coast reservoirs so that most Leeward Coast residents still have water, though water pressure may be lower than normal or may vary. All Leeward Coast residents are encouraged to conserve water, use what they need for necessary tasks such as cooking, cleaning, and personal hygiene, until the system has been returned to full operation.
 
A bypass was set up to partially restore water to the Honokai Hale subdivision, though water pressure there will be lower than normal, and may vary. Those residents are also being encouraged to conserve water, while using what they need for cooking, cleaning and personal hygiene, until repairs have been completed and the system returned to normal operation.
 
Currently there are 6 homes on Farrington Hwy. and the landfill which are without water. Water wagons have been provided for the affected customers.
 
The BWS was notified yesterday at 5:30 p.m. and crews identified the break in a 24" main just past the entrance to Waimanalo Gulch Landfill on the westbound shoulder of Farrington Hwy. This main feeds water to the entire Waianae Coast.
