Saturday is Drug Take-Back Day

On April 28th, the Drug Enforcement Agency will host its 15th National Drug Take-Back Day from 10am to 2pm local time. This is a day where local law enforcement agencies participate in this event and “Take Back” unwanted, expired, and unused prescription drugs from the community and disposes of them to DEA standards.

Riverside Police will participate in this event by offering the secured drug disposal bin in the foyer of the Police/Fire building located at 2990 NW Vivion Road, adjacent to City Hall. Other police department will be hosting special events at many locations. “This is a very important community program”, said Officer Matt Westrich, administrator of the Medication Take-Back Program. “By allowing citizens to dispose of unwanted, expired and unused prescription drugs it helps keep those drugs from getting into the wrong hands that could create serious health issues and possible criminal activity. Riverside Police have been part of this take back effort for several years. In addition to the drop off box, citizens can also get a free Medication Disposal Pouch to dispose medications at home”, Officer Westrich stated. To get disposal poaches just come into the Police/Fire Building and ask for one. Officer Westrich stated no needles (sharps), auto-injectors, inhalers or illicit gateway drugs could be accepted. The Platte County Health Department has a system in place to accept sharps. Contact the Platte County Health Department for more information.

The DEA began hosting the National Prescription Drug Take-Back events in 2010. Since its inception, over 4,823 million pounds or 2,411 tons of medications were surrendered for safe and proper disposal. The disposal service is free and anonymous for consumers, with no questions asked. Contact your local police department for locations of collection sites or go to the DEA website at www.dea.gov.
