Man Dies in Custody after Altercation with Sheriff’s Deputies in Modesto
Modesto CA – 38-year-old Alejandro Sanchez of Modesto died at a Modesto area hospital after an altercation with Stanislaus County Sheriff’s Deputies on Saturday, May 5, 2018. At approximately 10:30 a.m. two Sheriff’s deputies working together were flagged down by Sanchez in the parking lot of Country Girl Truck Stop in the 1200 block of South 7th Street in Modesto.
Sanchez was reporting something was wrong with his truck, which was in the parking lot of the truck stop. During the investigation, deputies learned the vehicle was not registered. Sanchez became upset when deputies advised him he would receive a citation and began fighting with the deputies. Several other deputies responded to assist, and Sanchez was taken into custody.
Sanchez was transported to a Modesto area hospital by a deputy for medical clearance and during the transportation process, he became unresponsive. Hospital staff provided emergency medical care, but Sanchez died a short time later.
The details of the interaction between Sanchez and the deputies are not being released as the investigation is still on-going. The cause of death will be determined during the autopsy.
The Sheriff’s Department and the Stanislaus County District Attorney’s Office are both conducting investigations into this incident.
