Teton Pass will close at 3:30 p.m. for avalanche work
Jackson, Wyo. The Wyoming Department of Transportation will be closing WYO 22 Teton Pass at 3:30 p.m. today for avalanche work, which will include heli-bombing.
Heli-bombing is a form of avalanche mitigation involving the placing of explosive charges, by helicopter, in strategic locations to bring down controlled avalanches. Crews are planning to drop about 6 charges at major slide areas.
“There has been some major movement in different areas on the pass and a few big slides already up there. We can’t wait any longer,” Maintenance Foreman Bruce Daigle said.
The closure duration could last only about 30 minutes, if everything goes smoothly. However, if the controlled avalanches sweep over the road--and depending on how wet and heavy the snow is--the closure could last hours into the evening.
WYDOT will notify the public of the closure on our 511 text alerts, as well as when the road is open. Sign up for 511 text alerts here: http://www.wyoroad.info/511/511NotifyAnnouncement.html.
WYDOT would like to remind drivers to slow down when driving in winter conditions, be alert and cautious of roadside workers and obey all traffic control devices.
