Lifesaving Medal Awarded at the City of Milpitas Public Safety Day Ceremony

This morning during the City of Milpitas Public Safety Day ceremony, Chief Armando Corpuz presented Officer Mattison Madnick with the Lifesaving Medal for his actions on April 4, 2018. We would like to congratulate Officer Madnick and we are thankful for the quick action he took on this day. Thank You Matt!

Below is the text from the commendation that Officer Madnick received.

"On April 4, 208, at approximately 6:04 pm, officers were dispatched to a medical aid call of a 7-year-old girl choking at a restaurant on South Abbott Avenue. Officer Madnick arrived on scene within one minute and met with the girl and her mother outside of the restaurant. The girl was holding her neck and unable to breath. Officer Madnick immediately performed abdominal thrusts on the girl, which were ineffective, and the girl went unconscious. Officer Madnick quickly assembled the breathing apparatus from his first aid kit as the girl's father and a bystander began CPR.

Officer Madnick's first aid training kicked in, and he immediately determined that the lifeless girl had an obstructed airway. He lifted up her chin and tilted her head back. Officer Madnick conducted a finger sweep of her mouth in an attempt to dislodge any foreign object, and she immediately began gasping for air. Personnel from the Milpitas Fire Department and Rural/Metro Ambulance Services arrived and rushed the girl to a hospital for medical treatment.

Several days later, the family advised doctors surgically removed a large piece of meat from their daughter's throat, and she spent some time recovering at the hospital. The family is forever thankful for appreciative of Officer Madnick's quick response and lifesaving efforts!

I commend Officer Mattison Madnick for his direct action, which helped save the girl's life! Therefore, I bestow upon Officer Madnick this Chief's Commendation for his extraordinary lifesaving effort under extremely stressful circumstances.
