Passed Out Perp Caught in Stolen Vehicle
On May 12, 2018, at about 09:26 AM an Anderson Police Officer was conducting a patrol of the Anderson Meadows Apartment Complex, located in the 2500 block of Highway 273.
The officer observed a white GMC Sierra pickup truck backed into a parking stall. A records check revealed the vehicle to be registered to U-Haul, however all of the U-Haul decals had been removed.
The officer found Jarett Lee Carpenter, age 38, of Anderson, passed out behind the wheel of the vehicle with heroin and drug paraphernalia in his lap. The officer contacted Carpenter and detained him without incident.
Carpenter attempted to build an elaborate story of how he came to possess the vehicle, however through the officers investigation all of his lies were proven to be false.
It was discovered that Carpenter had rented the U-Haul truck earlier in the month using another persons stolen driver's license. Carpenter then failed to return the pickup by the due date. Carpenter also admitted to removing all of the decals from the vehicle.
U-Haul was contacted and requested to press charges against Carpenter for vehicle theft.
Carpenter was placed under arrest for vehicle theft, forgery, identity theft, false impersonation, possession of heroin, and possession of drug paraphernalia.
