The Lewisville Police Department is set to begin its new Summer Traffic Enforcement Program (STEP) to address residential speeders and to help keep children safe during the summer months.

Summer break begins for most local schools on June 7, which means more children will be out playing in neighborhoods during the day. LPD will have officers strictly enforcing speed and safety violations, specifically on neighborhood streets and in alleys.

The speed limit on residential streets is 25 mph and is posted in all neighborhoods. By state law, alley speed limits are 15 mph, but Lewisville restricts the speed limit to 10 mph, if posted. The police department averages 43 automobile crashes involving pedestrians and bicyclists each year. “We know you get frustrated when people speed by your house, report the issue and let us handle it,” said Chief Kerbow. “We don’t want residents confronting drivers; that has the potential of violence.”

LPD will likely implement this program on a year-round basis if proven successful. While this will be a city-wide program, officers will concentrate on known areas that have generated speeding complaints.

“As we STEP up for kids, our hope is you will step off the accelerator,” said Assistant Police Chief Kevin Deaver. “In Lewisville, speeding fines range between $100 and $500, plus court costs.”
