Advisory

Back In Parking on Milwaukee Street

The Janesville Police Department asks that motorists exercise patience and be alert for a new parking pattern on West Milwaukee Street.

According to the City of Janesville Public Works Department, back-in angle parking is now available on the south side of W. Milwaukee Street between Jackson and Franklin Streets.

There are many benefits to back-in angle parking including: increased parking capacity compared to parallel parking, clear sight lines when pulling out, protection for children because open doors direct children to sidewalk rather than into the street, better maneuverability, easy loading and unloading cargo from the back of vehicles, and more.

The concept of back-in angle parking is very similar to parallel parking and can be implemented using three steps:
1. SIGNAL - Use your turn signal to show that you will be entering a parking stall (similar to parallel parking)
2. STOP - Pull ahead of the stall that you intend to park within and stop your vehicle (similar to parallel parking)
3. REVERSE - Back your vehicle up into the angled stall
Informational signs like the one below will be installed to inform drivers that these are back-in stalls. The signs will help to educate and guide drivers about how to use back-in angle parking stalls.

The City will hold a 30-day comment period to collect feedback and reactions to the back-in angle parking. The comment form is available online on the Engineering Division's website and can be accessed until June 25: www.ci.janesville.wi.us/backinangleparking
