Torrance Unified School District Cameras Help Locate Burglar
On May 20, 2018, at approximately 11:37 p.m., Torrance Police Officers responded to the 3500 block of 185th Street after a resident reported a suspicious person looking into parked vehicles with a flashlight. Officers located the suspect who later discarded property and fled on foot toward North High School.
The Officer-in-Charge, who oversees the dispatchers and call-takers within the Communications Division, accessed the video surveillance system at North High School. The Officer-in-Charge was able to safely direct Patrol Officers to a stairwell where the suspect was hiding.
At the conclusion of the investigation, Patrol Officers arrested the suspect for vehicle burglary, and were able to return numerous items of stolen property.
In 2016, the Torrance Unified School District implemented a surveillance system consisting of approximately 1,100 cameras mounted throughout 17 Elementary Schools, 8 Middle Schools, 5 High Schools and 3 Adult Schools to enhance student safety and security. The Torrance Police Department has the ability to view the cameras in real-time to assist with any emergencies.
The Torrance Police Department is grateful for another opportunity to collaborate with the community resulting in the apprehension of those involved in criminal activity.
