Newark Recognizes National Missing Children’s Day May 25, 2018

In 1983, President Ronald Reagan proclaimed May 25th as National Missing Children’s Day. Each year, the U.S. Department of Justice commemorates Missing Children’s Day with a ceremony honoring the heroic and exemplary efforts of agencies, organizations, and individuals to protect children.

National Missing Children’s Day is dedicated to encourage parents, guardians, caregivers, and other community members to make child safety a priority. And as you know, it's also important to remind people that child safety requires more than warnings about "stranger danger." The majority of abductions are committed by someone the child knows, including friends, family members, even a parent.
Here are some tips for parents:

• Avoid scare tactics while presenting key strategies for preventing abduction.
• Teach your children basic personal-safety skills, and maintain open communication with your children.
• Know where and with whom your children are spending their time.
