Pursuit of off-road motorcycle leads to arrest

On Tuesday evening, a Simi Valley Police Motor Officer observed a green off-road motorcycle run a stop sign in the area of Sequoia Ave. and Fir St. The Officer attempted to make a traffic stop for the violation and the rider fled from the officer. The Officer pursued the motorcycle and the rider was able to temporarily elude the officer by riding into the surrounding hills.

Familiar with the area and trails due to numerous complaints of off-road motorcyles, the Officer rode to the area where the trail ended and observed the motorcycle re-enter the city streets and again pursued the rider. The 15-year old rider was captured shortly after without incident and arrested for misdemeanor evading and not having a license.

The Simi Valley Police Department wants to remind our off-roading residents that Hungry Valley State Recreational Vehicle Area is only 60 miles away, and has 10,000 acres of land to legally ride a motorcycle or other off-road vehicle. Riders caught in Simi Valley illegally off-roading face a Municipal Code citation; potential impoundment of the motorcycle; a citation for an unregistered vehicle; a citation for a lack of insurance and a citation for riding out of their licensing class (if applicable). These fees add up quickly to $1000.00 or more.

More importantly, the risk of injury is significant in the hills around Simi Valley. The "trails" created by erosion can be unpredictable, rutted, slippery and steep. There are also man-made hazards put in place by surrounding property owners and we want to avoid any tragic incidents from occurring.

Any resident who sees illegal off-road activity is encouraged to contact the Simi Valley Police Department.
