To: All residents
Subject: Bear sightings
As many are no doubt aware, there have been numerous reported sightings of a bear during the past several days in the Swissvale and Edgewood area. Residents are encouraged to remember that while black bears are generally shy and harmless, they can become dangerous when provoked or when protecting their young. Reports of bear sightings are encouraged to be made to the Pennsylvania State Game Commission at 724-238-9523 press 1. Remember, bears are usually quite timid and afraid of people. There is no cause for alarm should you sight the bear at a distance, or from inside your home. If you do happen upon a bear in close proximity, it is best to make a lot of noise, raise your arms above your head, and yell loudly to frighten the bear away. DO NOT RUN AWAY from a bear, they may think you are prey or a rival and attempt to pursue you. Do not provoke, chase, attempt to lure, or try to capture a bear if seen. Again, sightings can be reported to the Game Commission by calling 724-238-9523 or call 911 and report it to you local police department. At this time, the Game Commission has been apprised of the reported bear sightings, and is actively attempting to capture the bear.
