A Message Concerning The Recent Gun Tragedy That Took The Life Of A 12 Year Old From The Desk Of Sheriff Victor Hill

Our prayers are with the family of 12 year Sakhya Bentley, and we all mourned with them.

I commend the County Police Detectives who went without sleep until they were able to bring closure to this case. They are truly the best at what they do.

Our community as well as our nation is  facing a serious problem of guns falling into the wrong hands of children and criminals.  At times like these, emotions can cause many to slip into the blame game pointing fingers to identify who is at fault.  We as a county will rise above anything that is unproductive so that we can work together to execute solutions immediately.

As the Sheriff of Clayton County, I take extreme ownership of everything that happens here.   No excuses, no complaining, but results driven by decisive action is the order of the day.  As we speak, my special forces  have identified a gang that we believe is the source of guns falling into the wrong hands in the area of the shooting.  In honor of Sakhya, their days are numbered and they will be removed from Clayton County.  We will also honor Sakhya with an escort that will be second to none when she is laid to rest.

We will intensify our efforts to concentrate on taking guns off of the streets from those who should not have them.  But we need your help as well.   Our crime analysis has indicated that the majority of the guns falling into the hands of our youth and criminals are being stolen from vehicles that are unlocked.  They are also being taking in burglaries where guns are left in easy to find areas unsecured.   I ask all of our gun owners to assist us in keeping guns from falling into the wrong hands by being careful not to leave them in unsecured vehicles.  I also ask that our gun owners make sure that when they leave a firearm unattended anywhere, make sure they are locked down so that they cannot be easily attained.  With all of us working together to achieve the reduction of guns falling into the wrong hands, we can achieve the results of a safer community much faster.

Once again, our thoughts sincerely remain with the family during their time of loss.   We pray that God will wipe the tears from their eyes.

Sheriff Victor Hill
