On June 7, 2018, at 11:31 P.M. deputies and Emergency Medical Services responded to Highway 64 East in the area of Five Points to a report of a person falling off the bridge. Upon arrival deputies and medical personnel were routed to a location under the bridge where a person later identified as Thirty-year-old James Johnson was laying on the ground unresponsive. EMS provided emergency medical assistance and transported Mr. Johnson to the Emergency Room where he was later pronounced deceased. Mr. Johnson and others were on their way to Sparta, Tennessee to attend Mr. Johnson’s dad’s funeral who had recently passed away in Giles County. Mr. Johnson had a blow out on their car and had stopped on the bridge. While Mr. Johnson waited on the tire to be replaced by another person, he was on the edge of the bridge looking over and lost his balance and fell. Mr. Johnson’s body was sent to the state medical examiner’s office for toxicology and autopsy. The investigation is ongoing pending autopsy results.
