Scam Calls
Several residents have contacted the Sheriff's Office today saying they were called by a person claiming to be our deputy. The fraudster tells them they have a warrant for missed jury duty and they must pay a fine. The residents are convinced to go to a local store and obtain pre-paid money cards then call back with the card numbers. They are told not to go to the Sheriff's Office since they have the active warrant.
With almost absolute certainty I can say the person making these calls is located in one of Georgia's prisons. Across the country prison inmates make millions upon millions of dollars a year doing scam phone calls. Unfortunately the easiest way to stop this is to get the word out and educate citizens.
The Sheriff's Office will NOT ask anyone to pay a fine by obtaining a pre-paid money card.
The internet is not a safe place, but it does have plenty of informative articles about these scams.
