Update to Yesterday’s Incident of Suspicious Persons

The subject in yesterday’s social media post has been identified by Ripon Police Detectives this morning. Detectives were able to determine that there are several subjects operating around Ripon and the surrounding areas with Child Safety Kits. These subjects are advising that they are subcontractors with an insurance company, but working with local police and fire departments.

Several months ago, there was an ad on Facebook.com advertising free child safety kits. The add indicated that these kits would be sent out after filling out a survey. Many of the contacts that are being made are due to these surveys being completed.

What is occurring is the information that was filled out online is being sent to these sub-contractors. The sub-contractors then call or come to your residence in attempts to set up an appointment with you and your family. At this appointment, they then try and sell their product.

Please keep in mind that in the City of Ripon vendors and salespersons that come door to door must have a City of Ripon business license and will have a photo identification card from the city with them. Please remember to be careful what information you fill out online.

Also know that the Ripon Police Department and Ripon Fire Department do not have anyone go out and solicit without notification. If you are interested in Child Safety Kits, the Ripon Police Department has a similar program that is offered at our National Night Out event.
