Alert

Coastal Flood Advisory until 01:00PM Thursday

...HIGH RISK OF RIP CURRENTS ALONG GULF-FACING BEACHES THROUGH THIS EVENING... ...MINOR COASTAL FLOODING EXPECTED ALONG THE ISLANDS AND AREA BAYS THROUGH THURSDAY MORNING... .Although tidal overflow and lower astronomical tides are expected, high period swells and swell heights will combine with areas of water on access beaches due to previous heavy rainfall to result in coastal flooding over gulf-facing beaches. The combination of run-up from the Gulf along with the heavy freshwater rainfall will result in areas of coastal flooding, especially during times of high tide. At times, heavy rainfall over the beaches could result in flash flooding. This coastal flooding will make driving difficult to impossible, and in some areas could result in beach access roads being inaccessible. Reports from local officials of flooding along the bays and intercoastal waterways has prompted us to include the inland locations along the bays in the Coastal Flood Advisory. On top of that, these high period swells will result in a high risk of rip currents through this evening. ...COASTAL FLOOD ADVISORY NOW IN EFFECT UNTIL 1 PM CDT THURSDAY... ...HIGH RIP CURRENT RISK REMAINS IN EFFECT UNTIL MIDNIGHT CDT TONIGHT...

* TIMING...Through midnight tonight for the high risk of rip currents and through Thursday morning for the coastal flooding.

* IMPACTS...Driving conditions may be impacted. Items along the beach may need to be removed due to the incoming wave runup along with standing water from heavy rainfall. Strong rip currents are expected along gulf-facing beaches. These rip currents can be life-threatening to anyone entering the surf, especially near piers and jetties.

* AFFECTED AREAS: ARANSAS ISLANDS ... CALHOUN ISLANDS ... KLEBERG ISLANDS ... NUECES ISLANDS

Instructions:

Swim near a lifeguard. If caught in a rip current, relax and float. Don`t swim against the current. If able, swim in a direction following the shoreline. If unable to escape, face the shore and call or wave for help. Do not venture far away from main roads if on the beach, as some access roads could flood resulting in beach going being stranded at times.
