Deputies arrest two suspects for child endangerment, possession of stolen property and ammunition

SUMMARY:
On June 19, 2018, at approximately 9:19 am, deputies from the Barstow Sheriff’s Station responded to a residence in the 36700 block of Frampton Road to serve a search warrant. The search warrant was authored following two vehicle burglaries that occurred in the parking lot of a diner in Yermo, CA.
Several pieces of personal property that had been reported stolen in the burglaries were located in the residence and in a vehicle on the property belonging to Cassandra Saling. Saling matched the description of the female observed in the video surveillance of the thefts. Saling was later contacted at her place of employment and subsequently arrested for possession of stolen property.
During the search, live ammunition was found and determined to belong to another resident, Jeffrey Dewerff. Dewerff was subsequently arrested for being a felon in possession of ammunition and both suspects were transported to the Barstow Jail.
Also located within the residence was an unsealed container of mercury. Direct and indirect exposure to mercury can lead to severe health problems or death. Deputies determined that Saling’s children had been exposed to the mercury for a prolonged period of time. The children were taken into custody by the San Bernardino County Children and Family Services and both suspects received additional charges of child endangerment.
