Deputies warn citizens to lock their vehicle, garage, and home doors following a string of burglaries

INCIDENT: Thefts and Burglaries
LOCATION: Needles, California
SUMMARY: The San Bernardino County Sheriff's Department/Needles Police Department is investigating a series of thefts and burglaries which have occurred throughout the City of Needles since May 1, 2018. Since that date, there has been an increasing number of burglaries and thefts from motor vehicles in the area of Coronado Street/De Soto Streets and R Street/California Avenue. Many of these crimes appear to be occurring overnight and nearly all the vehicles targeted have been to cars with the vehicle doors left unlocked. There have also been thefts from garages and homes which were left unlocked or open. Police are urging citizens to lock their homes and their vehicle doors and to remove any items of value.
On May 15, 2018 deputies from the Colorado River Station arrested Timothy Pugh and Andrea Gardner both from Needles, California, for possession of stolen property. Pugh and Gardner were found in possession of several items which had been reported stolen from a residential burglary in the 1900 block of Peru Street.
On May 30, 2018 deputies from the Colorado River Station arrested Darren Stevens and a 14-year-old male juvenile, both from Needles, California, for vehicle burglary and possession of a stolen firearm. The victim had parked his vehicle in a hotel parking lot near Needles Highway and R Street.
On June 2, 2018 deputies from the Colorado River Station arrested a 17-year-old male juvenile from Yucaipa, California, for theft of a vehicle in the 1900 block of Peru Street.
On June 14, 2018 deputies from the Colorado River Station arrested William Thompson, from Needles, California, for the burglary of a home in the 1900 block of Peru Street.
These thefts and burglaries are often crimes of opportunity where the thefts occurred only because the vehicles and/or homes were found unlocked. The public is being reminded and asked to secure their homes and vehicle's as well as to remain alert in their neighborhood, reporting anything unusual or suspicious to the police.
During an in-progress emergency, citizens should call 911 immediately. If needing to file a theft or burglary report, citizens are asked to call 760-956-5001.
